Our Story so Far

Good friends and co-owners Andrew and Nathan have a dream to create a community microbrewery.

The property was purchased in 2019, plans were drawn to update the existing building, and approval from the City was granted.  The COVID pandemic delayed implementation. Then just days before construction was scheduled to begin, a full-size pickup drove off the street at full speed and crashed through the building.  Fortunately no one was severely injured, but the building ultimately had to be completely demolished due to the extensive structural damage.  

This completely changed the scope, challenge, and cost of making the brewery a reality. Pivoting away from simply opening a brewery to becoming property developers, we worked with architectural studio Synecdoche Design and the City of Livonia to plan a brand new building utilizing the existing footprint. Both entities have been wonderful to work with and we are very grateful for their ideas and support.

Today we are still impacted by the aftershocks of the pandemic. The truck incident forced us to divert our initial resources to the aftermath of that event, and we are limited in our ability to move forward until we can secure the final funding.  Skyrocketing material and labor costs have forced us to look at creative solutions.  

We have faced and overcome many of the hurdles inherent in starting a small business, including the added challenges of a business that is strictly regulated. We are working to find creative solutions and are open to the idea of a multi-use building that could serve the community in a variety of ways.  

Despite the obstacles, we continue to work toward bringing our brewery to the community. We continue to refine our brews at home and look forward to sharing a pint with you when you walk through the doors of Coppersmith Brewing.
